The gallery's history

The Gallery was built on a project by the architect Giuseppe Mengoni. Construction began on March 7, 1865, by the English company “City of Milan Improvements Company Limited”. The work was inaugurated by King Vittorio Emanuele on September 15, 1867, and immediately assumed the role of an elegant meeting place for the bourgeoisie Milan’s citizens, and the heart of city life.

In 1869 the English company that had carried out the work until then had to abandon the construction due to financial difficulties: the Town Hall took over the entire construction site and finished the work in 1877.

The Gallery has a cross-shaped plan with orthogonal arms that converge in an internal octagonal square. The support structure of the roof is entirely in steel made up of arched ribs set on the walls of the buildings adjacent to the Gallery. A domed roof overlooks the central square. On the top of the arches, there is a series of gabled frames with the function of aeration of the Gallery.

THE SURVEYS

The study of the bearing capacity of the roof structure requires the exact knowledge of the geometries and the materials. The original design drawings were no longer available, and the roof was interested by major changes following the bombing of 1943.

The ongoing investigations are therefore aimed at the execution of geometric surveys and the study of the materials used to create the supporting structure and connections, as well as monitoring the status and the conditions of the roof.
